Fighting disease by sharing information

The Massachusetts General Hospital Neuroendocrine & Pituitary Tumor Clinical Center (NEPTCC) is a national referral center for the evaluation and treatment of pituitary tumors, recurrent pituitary adenomas, and tumors or disorders of the hypothalamic-pituitary region. As NEPTCC is comprised of endocrinologists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons, they collaborate often and share information that can lead to ground-breaking discovery.

Backstory

Historically, NEPTCC shared medical news and information through a printed newsletter that was distributed to a tight-knit group of researchers and specialists within the field. While sharing information led to new discoveries, the NEPTCC team knew there had to be a more efficient and cost-effective way to collaborate. MGH turned to Pidalia to investigate.

CHALLENGE

NEPTCC’s newsletter was designed, printed, and mailed multiple times a year–a costly endeavor. Archiving and searching through printed newsletters could be cumbersome. They wondered; was there a way to deliver the newsletter digitally, open access to the newsletter, and make it easy for people to search the archives?

SOLUTION

The system was simple: copy for a new issue of the newsletter would be sent to Pidalia and loaded into a website. Once the issue was approved, an email blast would be sent to the newsletter email list directing the recipient to the website.

Utilizing MGH’s brand standards, Pidalia designed a custom responsive email template to announce when new issues were published. The email had to look great on any email client and on any device.

Using historical content as a guide, Pidalia designed a responsive website for the newsletter. The site would not only “just work” on any browser and operating system, but it would provide all of the features that MGH was looking for.

We used WordPress, and customized it with PODS to turn the site into a fully functional Content Management System. Now we could programmatically differentiate between issues and dynamically build the content on the site based on which issue the viewer wanted to read. Past and present articles were searchable not only within the site, but were also now being indexed by the major search engines. It was truly one website for every issue.

Processing the email distribution list was a breeze. When a new issue was released, we leveraged our cloud-based email application to send emails to the distribution list, and we could generate reports on open rates, click-through, etc.–a clear advantage over the old way of doing things.

Nurse and Patient
Outcome

Researchers and individuals who need the latest information about pituitary tumors, recurrent pituitary adenomas, and tumors or disorders of the hypothalamic-pituitary region now have a publicly accessible resource to turn to.

MGH’s costs to distribute the NEPTCC newsletter have been reduced dramatically, while their access to reporting has increased. Thanks to efficiencies in the chosen technologies, we can publish and distribute information instantly and for a fraction of the cost.
